I think I did not belong to the right age required for this book. Maturity in thought is needed to appreciate such a book. The story revolves around Raman, a painter of signs and Daisy, a young lady determined to improve the plight of the Indian population through strict family planning. What is striking about the novel is the modern human psychology and state of relationships. Garnished with the hustle and bustle of a life in Malgudi, the story is written in a simple language. My reading experience was not a very good one as I haven't grown the mentality of liking such a plot. <br />The bittersweet story has a very slow pace and was not very engrossing to me. I plan to read this book once again in the future to make a clearer view about my true experience. What I would like to suggest the viewers of this blog is that go through the book and make your own views and opinions regarding it. Maybe your opinions would contrast mine. The vendor of sweets is a novel that revolves around the emotions and attachments of a father towards his son. It reveals the unspoken and unexpressed love and affection of a father towards such a son who according to me only knows to use his father. The ideas of modern world and the traditional Indian ideology subtly blend together in this story and give the reader a story with some depth. Some amount of maturity is needed to analyze and understand the book thoroughly so the book is not suitable for children. I did not experience any sort of entertainment while I turned page after page but a certain amount of anxiety grew in me and it urged me to read on. The climax unveils itself as unexpectedly and suddenly as can be.<br />The biggest specialty of  Narayan's writing is that he manages to add a new flavor to each and every novel, inspite of the simplicity  and vividness which they carry. Surprisingly, no humour was found in this set of mind boggling stories by me but it surely gave me an entirely new experience- an experience of studying different personalities and characteristics of strange yet unique people. Playing with the emotions and personalities of people is the predominant ingredient found mostly in stories by Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore and it astonished me , when I found this flavour in stories by R.K.Narayan . Stories such as 'A breath of Lucifer', 'Chippy', 'Annamalai', 'Under the Banyan tree' and many others grabbed hold of my attention all through the book. A must to read as it not only entertains it's readers but, also allows the reader to analyse the personalities of different people.</div>

Narayan book worm and here I am with another review of one of his most prominent books- The English teacher.  Surprisingly, this is the foremost book of his that brought tears into my eyes. It revolves around a bitter-sweet tale of an English professor and his family and feelings. In Narayan's autobiography I came to know that this bundle of pages actually included the author's own experiences with his daughter after his wife's death. As always the novelist's style of writing is vivid and lively. Though the story and the flow of the tale are thought-provoking some parts of this book could have been shortened. I felt they were prolonged a bit and that it could give birth to boredom in the reader. Well, this is altogether my perspective. The ingredients that enhance the experience while reading are wonderfully balanced and added to this work of art. Weaving humour and irony into this melancholy story is the author's skill that needs acknowledgement.<br />Build your own perception on this story after going through the colourful paragraphs of this remarkable<br />piece of work.</div>

A tiger for Malgudi

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">If you've gone through all my reviews you must have understood by now that I am a Narayan fan cause I feel all his books are mind boggling.<br />I didn't have a similar experience with this one as I felt it to be boring at many points. Personification is the main device used in this book to please it's readers where a tiger narrates it's life story with interventions of paragraphs told by the author himself. The main character of the book is Raja, a tiger with other important characters like Captain and 'Raja's master' whose name I do not know.<br />The story has a nice flow but it's pace is very slow according to me.The events revolve around Raja's conversion from a wild beast to a circus' baffoon and then to a beautiful soul who understands the life problems of humans and has just the body of a tiger and nothing else similar to the ferocious wild tiger. Guide

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">This book's review has already been posted once.<br />Guide is a book that turns it's reader into a driftwood which glides across the waves of a variety of feelings such as happiness, curiosity, a little sadness and also affection. The chapters of the book kept me busy wondering the abrupt changes of passages referring to the past and present of a guide and an enforced saint named Raju.<br />The miraculous book deals with Raju who had lost his trustworthiness once and doesn't want to lose it again. In his past Raju had grown an enormous amount of affection towards Rosy, a married classical dancer whom he had brought into the limelight. To save himself from losing his love, he had committed a crime that was not forgivable by Rosy.<br />Later, when his past meets the present, he is bound by the circumstances (read to find out what these circumstances were) around him and has to implement a 12 day fast to do good to his followers. The descriptive sentences also lead to the reader's liking towards the bundle of pages. It proved out to be a treasure trove for me and read it to find out what it turns out to be for you.</div>

My Days

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">My Days is a book whose 17 chapters gave me ubiquitous amount of joy, pleasure and entertainment . This was the first autobiography that I read, and it was very lively. It revealed to me the beauty of enjoying life in whatever state it was just as the author, R K Narayan did. The arrangement of the chapters are in such a way that it gives every detail of the novelist's life with a refreshing and poetic touch in it.<br />I liked the the first few chapters really very much which conveyed the joy of being a child in an adorable fashion. With his monkey and peacock company young Narayan enjoyed the Madras sun showing off its enormous power in the form of unbearable heat in the compound of his strict and modern thinking grandma's house. After a few leisure years of pondering here and there Narayan gets admitted to a school on his way to which he keeps admiring the cityscape of the modern city of Madras and gets lost into his own world.<br />He then goes and lives with his parents and siblings in Mysore with the pleasant hilly climate giving in way to a new life. Here Narayan blooms into a teenager hating formal studies as well as exams and craving to read various writings of Dickens, Marie Corellei, Tolstoy, Thomas Hardy and many others. With lots of efforts he somehow manages to get the degree of B.A. giving it a second try.<br />Then comes in the urge to write. He starts with short stories and sends them to London for publication in English magazines and Gazettes. He has many obstacles in his path which includes finding publishers. Then comes Graham Greene to his rescue who vanishes Narayan's problem helping him start his career.<br />Read the book yourself. As always, the descriptive language is to be focussed on. We see lovely characters floating before our eyes as if it were a movie, when one starts reading the bundle of funny as well as gripping pages of the book. The classic chronicle is a slightly abridged version of R.K Narayan's Swami and his friends but is brilliantly arranged and includes two other tales of the immortal character, Swami. Swami, Mani, and Rajan become friends and face a lot of incidents together. Tales speak of the little boy and his school teachers, his grandma, his new born brother, and entertain you a lot.  Naughty  Swami also runs away from his house in one of the tales ........What happens after that? Discover it yourself.The author, takes us to a wonderful atmosphere of school boys and help us realize the importance of childhood. When this book complies of 11 chapters, alternatively, one is told by Raju(A Guide) as a life story, and the other deals with the incidences happening with him, told by the author, R K Narayan. Raju meets a dancer, Rosie, married to a writer, and falls in love with her. Rosie is only her name, and does not describe her. She is a traditional Indian Dancer.
